Disability Holidays Guide

Holidays that actually work when you use a wheelchair, travel with oxygen, or plan around a disability.

Accessible holidays, worked out from the seat of a wheelchair.

Accessible Travel Resources

These are the independent bodies I turn to when I research a guide, and the ones worth going to yourself. They set the rules, publish the rights, or gather the reviews, and they are spread across different countries and systems, so reach for whichever maps onto your own trip. Rules change and vary by country and airline, so always confirm the current position with the source and with your provider before you rely on it.

Rights and assistance in the air

  • UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) on special assistance and flying with a disability, and how airports and airlines in the UK are held to it.
  • US Department of Transportation on your rights under the Air Carrier Access Act when you fly to, from, or within the United States.
  • European Commission on Regulation 1107/2006, the rights of disabled passengers and those with reduced mobility across Europe.
  • IATA on travelling with mobility aids, and the battery rules for powered wheelchairs and scooters.

Charities and further reading

  • The national disability charities, which publish plain-language guidance on travelling with a specific condition, on equipment, and on dialysis or other medical needs away from home.
